8 Days Cycling Halong Bay

Day 1: Hanoi Arrival

When we arrived at Noi Bai International Airport, our tour guide picked us up and led us to the hotel in the city center of Hanoi. Hanoi possessed a beauty that harmonized contemporary and traditional characteristics, which amazed us.

We were attracted by the typical atmosphere: Sword Lake, West Lake, quiet cafes, small streets, and street vendors.

We had a free day to get around this beautiful capital, enjoy a cyclo ride through busy streets, and stop to grab some street foods. We had a welcoming dinner at a local restaurant to experience Vietnamese cuisine.

Day 2: Hanoi – Halong – Van Don Bike Tour

On the second day of our bike tour in Vietnam, we transferred to Halong Bay. Along the route, you had the opportunity to explore and enjoy the enormous rice paddies of northern Vietnam. We examined our bikes and reviewed the Vietnamese road safety standards upon arrival at cycling points.

We pedaled through the countryside, passing numerous quiet towns along the river’s bank. We also visited a local market where we met lovely individuals and learned about their daily lives and local products.

For lunch, we took the bus to Hai Duong. After lunch, our bus transported us to Van Don, where we could rest and photograph the beautiful surroundings.

We resumed our ride via Cai Rong Township to the Van Don seashore. In the late afternoon, we geared up along the coastline back to the resort, where we stayed overnight and had dinner.

Day 3: Cai Rong – Tra Ban – Minh Chau Biking Tour

We warmed up by biking to Cal Rong dock after breakfast at the hotel. We had a leisurely bike ride through rice terraces to Tra Ban center after arriving at the boat pier. We stopped along the route to pay a visit to the primary school and kindergarten and presented our gifts to the children.

We continued to the hamlet to learn about the everyday lives of local fishermen. Our journey proceeded to the opposite side of the island, where our boat transported us to Minh Chau-Quan Lan beach. We rode to Quan Lan Township after arriving in Quan Lan to see the new scenery and virgin sand beaches.

After lunch, we leisurely cycled around the island, discovering the rich culture of Quan Lan and paying visits to some prominent temples and pagodas. We returned to the hotel at the end of the day to unwind and have a BBQ meal.

Day 4: Quan Lan Cycling Loop

We spent the fourth day of the North Vietnam cycling tour exploring the beauty of Quan Lan island. After breakfast at the resort, we rode to the Quan Lan communal house.

The communal house was made of wood, extremely ancient with spiritual meaning. Then we rode to the Quan Lan market to eat and buy some seafood.

In the afternoon, we visited Minh Chau beach, the favorite beach of tourists there. We loved its beautiful flat sand, clear sea water, and beautiful scenery. The deep forest on the sandy beach was suitable for walking and observing the sunset on the sea. We had a warming dinner with local people.

Day 5: Quan Lan – Bai Tu Long Kayaking

After a hearty breakfast at our hotel, we boarded our bikes and rode to Bai Tu Long Bay for a full day of kayaking.

We visited the floating fishing villages of Vung Vieng and the Vung Ha region and had lunch on a boat. The people were kind and helpful; they showed us how to row a boat and put up a net to catch fish.

The entire region is also ideal for trekking, kayaking, and rural tourism. After lunch, we kayaked to pearl farms to learn about creating magnificent pearls. While our boat was traveling to Halong Bay, we returned to the deck to rest and sip beverages. We ate dinner and slept on the boat.

Day 6: Ha Long – Lan Ha Bay Bicycle Tour

After breakfast on the boat, we visited Thien Cung Grotto, a magnificent cave in the heart of Halong Bay, by tender. Then, we disembarked the junk and took a transfer boat to Lan Ha Bay, which displayed unspoiled and unique beauty.

This remote paradise is a great beach destination with hundreds of untouched white sand beaches. While the beaches were modest, they were flanked by towering limestone karsts, which provided us with plenty of privacy. We had lunch on the boat before exploring the rest of this bay in the afternoon.

Day 7: Cat Ba – Viet Hai Village Cycling Tour

We got up early to transfer to the cycling point by ship. After spending one hour on the water, we reached a small jetty, from which we continued our cycling Halong Bay tour to a small tribal village of the Viet Hai minority.

We also walked through the protected old-growth forest where the untouched flora and the large and colorful butterflies inhabit.

We reached the highest peak of the island to admire the breathtaking views of Halong Bay. After a long hike, we visited Cat Ba water park resort. We spent the remaining time there, lazing around the sandy beach.

Day 8: Cat Ba – Hai Phong Cycle Tour – Hanoi Departure

On the last day of our Vietnam bike tour, we took time to discover the daily life of local fishermen and experience interesting activities on the way back to Hanoi. We started cycling from our hotel, along the coast, to Cai Vieng Commune and Viet Hai fish sauce village.

We took two ferries before landing in Hai Phong city. We had lunch at a local seafood restaurant before cycling back to Hanoi via Hai Duong Province.

When we arrived in Hanoi in the late afternoon, we attended a farewell dinner arranged for us. That also brought to the end of our 8-day tour cycling Halong Bay.
